A set of three works for the Library Campus. Outdoor projects, “Picadillo Folklorico” and “El Movimiento”, are both decorative screens that feature water-jet cut designs inspired by the “Papel Picado” or cut paper decorations that embellish most Mexican celebrations. The indoor project, “Pasaje”, is an arch that symbolizes both a library as a transformation portal and San Ysidro’s special place as the most crossed border gate in the world. The arch columns feature back-lit lenticular transparencies that exhibit two images in flip format, one showing historical pictures of San Ysidro and the other showing a plethora of images that symbolize curious illustrations in the exploration of books. Both flip lenticular designs spiral up around each column. The top of the arch features a hand sculpted cantera stone design that features a “meztizaje” of European and meso-American motifs.

About San Ysidro Public Library

The San Ysidro Library opened on Sept. 7, 2019 and serves the communities of San Ysidro and Otay Mesa West. As an educational resource and gathering space for the community, the library expects to have more than 55,000 patron visits a year. The 15,000 square-foot facility was designed with input from the community and is more than three-times the size of the original San Ysidro Library, built in 1924. It features modern amenities, including designated children and teen areas, study and meeting spaces, a computer lab, a maker space with 3D printer, a multi-purpose community room and an outdoor movie screen.
